Guildford Castle

Guildford Castle

Originally built by William the Conqueror soon after 1066 as a wooden motte and bailey and therefore one of the oldest English castles, the stone keep dates from the 12th century and was probably built during the reign of King Stephen.

During the reign of Henry III (1207 – 1272) the castle grounds became one of the most luxurious royal residencies in England with the keep becoming both the administrative centre for Surrey and a gaol. After Henry’s death the castle fell into decline until being bought by Francis Carter in 1611. His attempt to turn it into a private residence failed and the roof and floor timbers were subsequently removed.
